MORE THAN A SONG
Music rarely begins with a finished song. Sometimes it starts with a bass line. Sometimes a phrase, a memory, a contradiction, a rhythm, or a question that will not leave me alone.
The Music is where I take you inside that process, not simply to hear what I made, but to understand why I made it.
“The groove gets you through the door. The idea gives you a reason to stay.”
— CORNELIUS

WHAT I HEARD
Before there are lyrics, I often hear a record as pieces of a larger arrangement: bass, drums, guitar, voices, strings, horns, silence. The challenge is not adding everything I hear. The challenge is determining what the song actually needs.

WHAT I WAS THINKING
For me, songwriting becomes interesting when the obvious subject isn’t the real subject. ENTROSPEKTIVE can talk about politics, money, violence, technology, religion and everything happening outside our windows. But if the song ends there, I’ve only pointed a finger. The real turn happens when the question becomes: What about me?

WHY THAT SOUND
Funk gives a serious idea somewhere to move. A heavy bass line, guitar scratches, brass stabs, strings and falsetto voices can make the body respond before the mind realizes what it is being asked to consider. That contrast matters to me.

FROM THE RECORD
“I can name every damn thing wrong with the world and never once name me.”
— CORNELIUS
That line is where ENTROSPEKTIVE reveals what it is actually about. Looking inward isn’t retreating from the world. Sometimes it is the most uncomfortable way of confronting it.
